HORSEMEN COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST ROCK RIVER

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Rock River jumped out to a commanding 26-7 advantage by halftime Saturday and Lexington’s valiant second-half rally came up just short in a 42-37 loss to the Raptors in Rupp Arena.

The Horsemen (4-3), who trailed 35-19 with 3:59 remaining in the game, scored a pair of late touchdowns to come as close as four points, 35-31, before Rock River (4-3) pulled out the victory.

Lexington signal-caller Kewan Dewberry completed 13-of-22 passes for 173 yards with three scoring strikes. Receiver Harry Lewis caught six passes for 73 yards with two scores, and also threw a key touchdown pass late in the game. Running back Rayshawn Askew had six carries for 29 yards with a score.

“We just couldn’t get any kind of flow going in the first half,” Horsemen head coach Mike Zuckerman said. “We knew at halftime that it was going to be an up-hill battle. We tried to get our guys focused at halftime and I think they did a good job in the second half of really getting after people. We came out and played hard in the second half, but it was just too late.”

The Raptors scored two unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter as Ben Sankey threw a 5-yard scoring strike to Patric Hall at the 5-minute mark of the opening period to give Rock River an early 6-0 advantage. He then connected on a 45-yard pass to Lawrence Bady with 1:33 left in the first quarter to extend the Raptors’ lead to 13-0 after a point-after by Doug Daniel.

Hall then ran the ball in from 7 yards out at the 12:38 mark of the second quarter to put Rock River ahead 19-0. On Lexington’s next possession, Diontea Stewart capped a six-play, 30-yard drive with a 3-yard run for score to narrow Rock River’s edge to 19-7 before Hall scored on a 1-yard run with 1:26 left until halftime to send the Raptors into intermission with a 26-7 advantage.

Backed up into his own end-zone, Daniel connected on a 50-yard field goal at the 12:45 mark of the third quarter to widen Rock River’s margin to 29-7. Askew then scored from 10-yards out with 4:07 left in the third quarter and the Horsemen headed into the final period of play down 29-13.

To begin the fourth quarter, Daniel added a 23-yard field goal at the 11:25 mark that gave Rock River a 32-13 lead and made it appear as if a late Horsemen comeback might not be possible. Jarrod Rouanzoin, however, quickly caught a five-yard pass from Dewberry on a three-play drive to bring Lexington within 13, 32-19, with 9:58 remaining.

Daniel connected on a 25-yard field goal with 3:59 to go, but the Horsemen still had some fight left in them. Askew caught a 2-yard pass from Lewis with 2:38 remaining on a two-play drive, and then on another two-play drive, Dewberry connected with Lewis for a 23-yard score with 1:24 remaining. Hall ran the ball in from 28-yards out with 1:10 left in the game to give the Raptors a 42-31 lead. Lewis then scored on a 20-yard pass from Dewberry, but Rock River recovered Lexington’s on-side kick and time ran out to give the Raptors the win.

“Things aren’t going to get any easier for us,” Zuckerman said. “That is the way it is when you have a very competitive league. You just have to come out and play your best game every time out. We have to get back to work, get some people healthy and get this thing rolling again.”

Lexington returns to action Saturday, May 19, when it travels to Evansville, Ind., to take on the Evansville BlueCats. Kick-off is slated for 8:05 p.m. EDT and the game will be carried live on 101.5 FM The Planet and WVLK 590 AM with Gary Ball and Randy Wilson.
