ASKEW LIFTS LEXINGTON PAST OHIO VALLEY TO CONCLUDE REGULAR SEASON

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Rayshawn Askew’s 1-yard run with 1:35 remaining Saturday lifted Lexington to a 47-40 win against border-rival Ohio Valley in the final regular-season game of the year and the final regular-season game for head coach Mike Zuckerman, who resigned on Wednesday to spend time with family.

The Horsemen (8-7) earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming United Indoor Football playoffs which commence next Saturday. Complete pairings will be announced Sunday.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in this arena with these guys over the last four years,” Zuckerman said. “To walk off the field with a win in my last home game is pretty special.”

Askew rushed 14 times for 62 yards with three touchdowns to lead Lexington. Askew now has 206 career touchdowns and is now second all-time in professional football history behind the legendary Jerry Rice.

The Horsemen got on the board first as new wide receiver Tavon McGee hauled in a 7-yard pass in the back of the end-zone to give Lexington an early 6-0 advantage with 13:46 to go in the first. Forty seconds later, Ohio Valley (2-13) knotted the score at 6 after Demetrius Wilbert returned the Horsemen kickoff 54 yards.

Darrell Dowery gave Ohio Valley a 13-6 lead after catching a 6-yard pass for touchdown with 3:11 to go in the first quarter. J.T. Haskins then returned the ensuing kickoff 45 yards that included leaping over kicker John Wehrle as he tried to make the saving tackle. Two plays later, Askew found the end-zone from 3 yards out to tie the score at 13-all with 1:40 left in the opening quarter.

The second quarter featured only two scores but they were important and timely. Askew scored his second consecutive touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with 1:58 to go in the half and McGee caught his second pass of the day, this one for 18 yards, to send Lexington into intermission ahead 27-13.

Ohio Valley struck quickly out of the halftime locker room as Willie Austin hauled in a 5-yard pass from signal-caller Oscar Davenport to bring the Greyhounds within eight, 27-19 with 11:22 to go in the third period. William Mulder returned the PAT of that score for a touchdown that extended Lexington’s advantage to 29-19.

The Greyhounds’ Musa Nash found the end-zone on a 50-yard fumble recovery with 9:10 to go in the third to bring Ohio Valley as close as three points, 29-26. The Horsemen responded with a 1-yard pass from Askew to wide receiver Chad Spencer at the 3:34 mark of the third to move in front by 10, 36-26, before the Horsemen held Ohio Valley in the end-zone on a Collin Barber kickoff for a rouge to go up 37-26.

Wilbert again found the end-zone to begin the fourth-quarter scoring for the Greyhounds. His 1-yard run brought Ohio Valley within five, 37-32, with 11:40 remaining in the game. Barber answered by nailing a 44-yard field goal to widen Lexington’s margin to 40-32. Ferguson scored on a 1-yard run with 3:56 remaining in the game before Askew’s 1-yard run with 1:35 left sealed with win for Lexington.

The Horsemen return to action Saturday in the first round of the UIF Playoffs. A complete release detailing Lexington’s playoff picture will be issued on Sunday.
