RIVER CITY EDGES LEXINGTON HORSEMEN IN OVERTIME
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Anthony Fisher's 7-yard pass to Muhammad Abduqaadir in overtime Saturday propelled River City past the Lexington Horsemen, 46-39, at Family Arena. The Horsemen (1-1), who trailed for much of the second half and found themselves down 39-32 with 41 seconds remaining, knotted the score at 39 with 29 seconds left on a 13-yard pass from signal-caller Kewan Dewberry to Octavious Lattimore. A field goal by River City's Derek Kutz went wide right as time expired in regulation and the two teams entered overtime. The Rage (2-0) got the ball first in the overtime period and Lexington’s J.T. Haskins appeared to have picked off River City's Fisher early in the drive, but the Horsemen were flagged for a roughing-the-passer call and the Rage scored on the next play. The score was Abduqaadir's fourth of the game and his first through the air. On Lexington’s overtime possession, Dewberry found John Cooper in the end-zone, but Antoine Sims was called for a block in the back and the score was waived off. Dewberry threw an interception on the next play to give River City the win. The Horsemen were playing without several key players, who were hampered by injuries. Wide receiver Chad Spencer, who was sidelined with a hamstring injury, was the most notable of the players who did not take the field for Lexington. "I couldn’t ask any more of our guys than the effort they gave tonight," Horsemen head coach Mike Zuckerman said. "We came in underhanded tonight and were only able to dress six linemen. I thought we executed very well tonight. Our guys in that locker room are very upbeat and we just have to go back to work, fix a few things and get some guys healthy. It’s only the second game of the season and we have a lot of football left to play." Wide receiver Harry Lewis led the way for Lexington, catching 10 passes for 88 yards with two scores. Dewberry was 20-of-29 from scrimmage for 163 yards with three touchdown strikes.
Running back Rayshawn Askew was the Horsemen’s leader on the ground, rushing 13 times for 30 yards with two touchdowns. He has now scored a team-leading five times this season. Lexington took an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter after a rouge on the game’s opening kickoff and a 34-yard field goal by kicker Collin Barber at the 6:27 mark of the opening period. The Horsemen marched down the field to begin the second quarter and Askew capped the 10-play, 45-yard drive with a 1-yard run for score on fourth down. The point-after by Barber gave Lexington a 11-0 advantage at the 10:27 mark of the second quarter. River City got on the board on its next possession as scored on a 2-yard run as the Rage cut their deficit to 11-7. The Horsemen regained the lead on the next possession as special teams standout William Mulder returned the ensuing kickoff down to the River City 17-yard line. Two plays later, Dewberry connected on his first touchdown pass as a member of the Horsemen. Dewberry found Lewis from 11 yards out for Lewis' first TD catch this season to extend Lexington’s advantage to 18-7 in a scoring drive that took just 1:47. The Rage came within five points at halftime, 18-13, as Abduqaadir found the end-zone for his second score, this time on a 6-yard run with 2:54 left until intermission. River City scored the first points of the second half when Fisher threw a 25-yard touchdown strike to Moses Regular to give the Rage their first lead of the evening at 20-18 with 6:46 left in the third quarter. Askew responded with his second score of the game at the 2:16 mark of the period as he broke through four defenders and stayed on his feet to find the end-zone. Dewberry then connected on a pass to John Cooper for the two-point conversion that put Lexington back ahead 26-20. The Rage tied the score at 26 with 36 seconds left in the third quarter as Regular caught a 6-yard pass from Fisher to pull River City even at 26-26. Hurtiss Chin hauled in an 11-yard pass from Fisher with 6:49 left in the game to put the Rage ahead 33-26. Lewis responded with a 17-yard catch for score from Dewberry to put the Horsemen back in front 33-32 with 4:37 remaining. Lewis tried to run the ball in for a two-point conversion but was stopped short of the end-zone. The Rage re-took the lead at 39-32 on a 1-yard run by Abduqaadir to set up the exciting late-game finish. Abduqaadir carried the ball 17 times for 44 yards with three touchdowns to lead River City. Lexington returns to action Saturday when it returns to Lexington for its home opener against Evansville. Kick-off in Rupp Arena is set for 7:30 p.m. EDT and the game will be carried live on 101.5 FM The Planet with Randy Wilson.
