EPIC FOURTH-QUARTER COMEBACK LEADS LEXINGTON HORSEMEN PAST EVANSVILLEEVANSVILLE, Ind. – Rayshawn Askew’s 1-yard touchdown run with 37 seconds remaining and William Mulder’s key interception in the waning seconds Saturday capped an epic fourth-quarter comeback by Lexington that gave the Horsemen a 42-41 win against the BlueCats in Roberts Stadium. With time ticking down and Evansville looking to get in position to kick a potential game-winning field goal, the BlueCats opted to go to the air on second down at the 20-yard line. Evansville quarterback Brent Dearmon’s pass was picked off by Lexington’s Mulder at the 5 yard line to seal the victory for the Horsemen (7-5). “This was definitely a big win for us,” Lexington head coach Mike Zuckerman said. “It wasn’t pretty but as long as you get the win, sometimes that’s all that matters. Evansville has some pretty tall receivers, but William Mulder got some great elevation on that last play to get a hand on it and that was huge. “Our defense has played so solid all year long,” Zuckerman said. “They’ve kept us in games all season long and that’s all you can ask for in this league because it’s so offense-oriented.” The Horsemen trailed 31-16 at halftime and were down 38-23 heading into the fourth quarter. Evansville got on the board early after recovering a deflected kick-off. Dearmon found wide receiver Levron Williams from 29 yards out on the opening play from scrimmage to give the BlueCats an early 7-0 advantage. Evansville then backed the Horsemen up into their own end-zone and Deion Holts sacked Kewan Dewberry for a safety to extend the BlueCats’ lead to 9-0 with 7:01 left in the opening quarter. The Horsemen got on the board with 1:51 left in the first period as Octavious Latimore hauled in a 30-yard pass from Dewberry to cut Lexington’s deficit to 9-6. Evansville running back Michael Cosey ended the first quarter with a 32-yard TD reception from Dearmon that ended the opening stanza with the BlueCats ahead 16-6. Seconds into the second quarter, running back Askew found the end-zone on a 1-yard plunge to bring the Horsemen within three, 16-13. Evansville’s Cosey scored his second touchdown of the night with a 6-yard run at the 10:11 mark of the second frame before the BlueCats again sacked Dewberry in the end-zone to widen their advantage to 25-13. A 32-yard pass from Dearmon to Williams with 12 seconds left until halftime gave the BlueCats a 31-13 advantage, but Collin Barber nailed a 27-yard field goal with 1.5 seconds remaining in the period to send the two teams into intermission with Evansville leading 31-16. Neither team scored for much of the third quarter until Askew found the end-zone from 5 yards out with 3:40 left in the third stanza. A 2-yard run by Cosey, his third score of the night, gave Evansville a 38-23 advantage heading into the final period of play. In the fourth quarter, Askew and John Cooper caught 32 and 13 yard touchdown passes, respectively, from Dewberry to bring the Horsemen within 38-36 with 8:56 remaining in the game. Nate Meyer connected on an 18-yard field goal with 1:46 left to set up Lexington’s late-game heroics.
