HORSEMEN CONTINUE DOMINANCE OF OHIO VALLEY WITH LARGEST WIN IN SERIES
Dewberry’s seven touchdown passes strikes were one short of the Horsemen (3-1, 3-1 Eastern Conference) franchise record of eight. Former signal-caller Dusty Bonner, who owns nearly all of the team’s passing records, twice threw eight touchdown passes in a game. He last accomplished the feat May 29, 2004 against Evansville. Lexington’s 30-point victory was its largest in its series with Ohio Valley (1-3, 1-3 Eastern Conference). Dewberry, the reigning United Indoor Football Offensive Player of the Week, was 19-of-23 from scrimmage for 224 yards to lead Lexington, which had its best passing game of the season. The Horsemen held a 224-108 advantage in passing yards. Three Lexington receivers tallied 50 or more yards receiving in the game. Harry Lewis led the receiving corps with five catches for 59 yards with two scores. John Cooper had four catches for 68 yards with two scores and Chad Spencer also caught two TD passes. The Lexington defense was also impressive, allowing just one Ohio Valley touchdown in the second half. Shaun Jones led the defensive effort with seven tackles and Ellery Moore, the reigning UIF Defensive Player of the Week, had three tackles – 2.5 for loss – with 1.5 sacks. “It was a total-team effort tonight,” Horsemen head coach Mike Zuckerman said. “We feel good about where we are right now as we get ready to go on the road for two games. Our guys seem to like going on the road this season and we are going to be ready to play against Bloomington next week.” The Horsemen got on the board with a pair of touchdowns early in the first
quarter. Spencer hauled in a 3-yard pass from Dewberry at the 10:28 mark to
take a 6-0 advantage. The Lexington defense stepped up big on the next
possession, forcing Ohio Valley to settle for a 53-yard field goal attempt
by kicker John Wehrle, but his kick failed and J.T. Haskins returned it 36 Ohio Valley narrowed the margin to five as Keith Brooks ran it in from
8-yards out with 2:48 left in the quarter to bring the Greyhounds as close
as 12-7. Diontea Stewart did it all for the Horsemen on the next drive as he
returned the ensuing kick-off 45 yards to give Lexington a first-and-goal
situation at the Ohio Valley 9-yard line. One play later, he found the Ohio Valley moved in front early in the second quarter as Lexington’s Jarrod Rouanzoin fumbled the ball on a reception from Dewberry and the Greyhounds’ Byrone Bell returned the fumble 44 yards for a touchdown to give Ohio Valley a 20-19 advantage. The Horsemen re-took the lead on the next series as Rouanzoin caught a 25-yard pass from Dewberry and spun around his defender for a touchdown at the 11:56 mark of the second quarter to put Lexington back in front 25-20. On the ensuing drive, Lexington’s Moore recorded back-to-back sacks, forcing
Wehrle to attempt a 58-yard field goal that was well short and sailed wide
into the stands. Later in the period, Lewis caught a 15-yard pass from
Dewberry at the 5:21 mark to put the Horsemen ahead 33-20. Ohio Valley
responded with a 9-yard pass from Ray to Darrell Dowery to bring the The Horsemen extended their lead to 53-26 in the third quarter as Cooper and Spencer caught 12 and 5-yard passes, respectively, from Dewberry to give Lexington a sizeable cushion heading into the final period. Midway through the fourth quarter, Stewart plunged into the end-zone from the 3-yard line to widen the Horsemen’s margin to 59-33. He then rounded out Lexington’s scoring with a 21-yard run with 3 minutes remaining in the game to make the final 66-33 score. Lexington returns to action Saturday when it begins its two-game road swing with a trip to Bloomington, Ill., to face the winless Bloomington Extreme. Kick-off is slated for 8:05 p.m. EDT and the game will be carried live on 101.5 FM The Planet and WVLK 590 AM with Gary Ball and Randy Wilson.
